Set up wija (1) - generate your key pair

If you generate your key pair, you can receive encrypted messages from others, and digitally sign messages you send to others or presence you share with others. It prepares the foundation for safe communications.

1. Guidance

When you start wija for the first time, if a key pair is not detected, the following window appears so that you can decide whether to generate a key pair or not.

[Do you want to generate a key pair?]

Choose "Yes".

2. Specify how you want to generate your key pair

The following window appears, to which you specify the parameters.

[Key pair generation]

[Algorithm]
  • Choose the encryption method to be used by the key pair.
  • DSA and ElGamal by default.
[Length]
  • Choose the bit-length of the key to be used for encryption (the longer the safer).
  • 1024 bits by default.
[Valid for]
  • Specify when the key pair is expired.
  • The key does not expire by default.
[User ID]
  • Enter the name and the e-mail address.
  • The name must be longer than 4 letters.
  • The comment is used for reducing ambiguity in the names or e-mail addresses, and normally you would want to leave it blank.
[Protection]
  • Enter the passphrase you have chosen.
  • You will have to retype it so that mistyping can be detected.

3. Generate a key pair

After you click on "Generate" button, the following window appears.

[On random number generation]

It is very important that you get sufficiently random number to generate a strong key pair.

After clicking on "OK", you may want to help generation of a random number by typing, moving your pointing device, or opening files, at will.

While the key pair is generated, the progress is displayed as follows.

[Key generation in progress]

When generation is complete, the following window appears.

[Key generation completed]

Click on "OK", and go on.
