All Japanese characters are displayed as tofu ([]) on Java applications.

Japanese fonts used by Java are incorrectly set (a problem of versions of Java distributed by Sun Microsystems, Inc.).

>> Solution

Follow these steps to make Java applications display Japanese characters correctly.

• Place Japanese TrueType fonts under "lib/fonts/fallback/" of where Java has been installed.
• Japanese TrueType fonts are found under
  • "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/" or
  • "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/kochi/" so that
  • you can copy "kochi-mincho.ttf" and "kochi-gothic.ttf" to the directory.
